Seniors: The Benefits of Decluttering Your Home

Americans are somewhat used to clutter. There is barely one among us that doesn’t live in at least a slightly cluttered home. Whether it’s piles of newspapers on the sideboard or stuffed animals pushed behind the sofa, raising a family and then entering retirement years means dealing with a lot of extra “stuff” in the home. But, did you know that all of that “stuff” can be dangerous?

It’s a fact that one out of every three people over the age of 65 falls every year. It’s also a fact that falling is the number one cause of injury-related fatalities for that age group. With a lot of clutter around – slipping, tripping or falling is a whole lot easier to do.

Not to mention that seniors are at a higher risk of developing hoarding disorders, due to being alone, losing their spouse, depression, loneliness, etc. Hoarding disorders are not only hard on the senior but also hard on the family. Seniors may find that family and friends visit much less often, and that they start feeling more and more out of control of their lives.

Excessive papers, materials, and junk in general can pose fire hazard problems. Consider piles of papers that are mistakenly left on a radiator or space heaters that get accidentally covered by a piece of clothing. Plus, hoarding can lead to mold and mildew problems, heating and air ducts that become blocked, bacteria exposure, and more.

In addition to the physical and mental toll clutter can take on a person, there is also a financial impact. The senior may end up losing their hairbrush or some article or piece of equipment or appliance that they deem necessary. When they can’t find it – they replace it. This not only adds to the amount of “stuff” in the home, it also wastes money.

Organizing the home, by throwing items into “save,” “donate,” and “trash” piles will not only work wonders for the home, it will also work wonders for the senior’s mental attitude and physical well-being. Plus, if you’re ready to sell your home, decluttering will increase its value and your home will sell more quickly.

Why Seniors Should Get a Shingles Vaccine

Varicella Zoster: it’s the name of the virus that causes chickenpox as well as the shingles virus. Most adults and seniors have had chicken pox, though with the new chicken pox vaccine, it’s unlikely children and teens will have to worry about this virus in the future. It’s believed that one out of three American adults will develop shingles in their lifetime, and it can prove to be excruciatingly painful and debilitating.

After a chickenpox outbreak the virus that causes shingles stays inside the body, and basically goes into “hiding” until a later date, if at all. If it does reactivate, shingles appear which amounts to blisters and a painful, itchy, tingling rash all over the body. Once the rash clears, it’s still possible for people to develop postherpetic neuralgia, which is a severely painful condition in place of the rash. This painful condition can last anywhere from weeks on up to years.

Seniors need to be especially aware of the risk of shingles because over half of shingles cases are people over the age of 60. If shingles appear on the face or even near the eyes, the condition and the rash aftermath can cause permanent hearing or vision problems. Plus, if the individual’s immune system has been previously compromised in some way, whether it’s due to chemotherapy, radiation, a previous transplant, or the existence of HIV, it makes the risk for shingles and the debilitating and painful skin condition even greater.

Get the Vaccine

It is recommended by the Center for Disease Control for anyone over the age of 60 to get the shingles vaccine. Some insurance companies will even cover it for people over the age of 50. In trials, the vaccine proved to cut the risk of developing the disease in half in people over the age of 60, and reduced the risk of developing the painful rash afterwards by nearly 70%.
